The annual MFA Grant Program was created in 1997 to help MFA painters & sculptors in furthering their artistic careers and to aid in the transition from academic to professional studio
work upon graduation.
Each recipient will receive an MFA Grant in the amount of $15,000. To date the Joan Mitchell Foundation has awarded 162 MFA Grants. These grants are given in recognition of artistic quality to artists chosen from a body of candidates put forth by nominators from the academic art community across the United States.
The nominated candidates images were viewed for grant consideration through an anonymous process by a jury panel. The jury convened in April at the facilities of the Joan Mitchell Foundation.
I'm Leaving...And I'm not Coming Back
is a group project I lead in November 2009 with twelve advanced painting students.
Phyllis Bramson, a nationally renowned painter from Chicago, served as juror in the 2006 Illinois Board of Higher Education Art Competition. In all, Bramson selected 55 finalists, including the four purchase award winners, five winners in artistic categories, and two honorable mentions for the awards ceremony held at Robert Morris College.
My piece, Cityscape, was selected for one of the purchase prize awards. The state of Illinois now owns Cityscape, and it hangs in a conference room in the new Capitol Building in Springfield.
